This is an old tool I wrote while learning how to write python perhaps my first complete python project.

I've recently tried my hand at a rewrite so that the code is a little less embarassing, but I'm sure there are still some laughable hacks and other ugly corners I still use this quite often in my daily analytical work, and for many more tasks than I originally intended.

I don't know about you, but I despise spreadsheets. It's not just Microsoft Excel - it's most any spreadsheet application.

Don't get me wrong - they're incredibly useful in certain use cases, like creating a document containing some simple tabular data, or for slapping together a adhoc calculator of sorts for solving some complex math problem No thanks. Even if you only have rudimentary SQL query skills, a database is a much more useful venue for analyzing tabular data. Thus the primary use case for this tool.

All too often I found myself needing to take some data in a spreadsheet, or other tabular data, and generate some report from it. From there I'll usually open the database using a tool like Sqliteman recommended or SQLite Database Browserand use the built-in query editors to query for whatever information I'm after.

To try this for yourself, copy a csv file into the directory where you have downloaded SQLiteMaker and run:. SQL databases behave less like object collections the more size and performance start to matter; object collections behave less like tables and rows the more abstraction starts to matter.

SQLAlchemy aims to accommodate both of these principles. SQLAlchemy considers the database to be a relational algebra engine, not just a collection of tables. Rows can be selected from not only tables but also joins and other select statements; any of these units can be composed into a larger structure.

SQLAlchemy's expression language builds on this concept from its core. SQLAlchemy is most famous for its object-relational mapper ORMan optional component that provides the data mapper patternwhere classes can be mapped to the database in open ended, multiple ways - allowing the object model and database schema to develop in a cleanly decoupled way from the beginning. The library takes on the job of automating redundant tasks while the developer remains in control of how the database is organized and how SQL is constructed.

The data is now loaded into the df variable which is an instance of the pandas DataFrame class. When we run the count function on this DataFrame, we get back that it has rows.

Next, we'll take this set of rows of data and slice out only the rows that pertain to the United States. We can pick out all of the rows of data for a single country using a pandas function to match the countriesAndTerritories column to the country of our choice. You can find out what's in it by having it print itself:.

Let's proceed with saving this subset to a SQLite relational database. You can of course save the file with whatever name you want and in any location, not just the directory where you are executing the Python REPL. When the connection is successful you will see output similar to the following:. Set a variable name with the string of a table name you would like to create. Note that in this case we are going to fail if the table already exists in the database.

Check the pandas. We can take a look at the data through the sqlite3 command line viewer to make sure it was properly saved to the SQLite file. This will open up the command line prompt to interact with SQLite databases.

To work with them we generally would need to write raw SQL queries, pass them to the database engine and parse the returned results as a normal array of records.

To start interacting with the database we first we need to establish a connection. Some examples of connecting to various databases can be found here. SQLAlchemy can be used to automatically load tables from a database using something called reflection.

Hence it lets you focus on data in Flask based web development, instead of file formats. The idea originated from the common usability problem: when an excel file driven web application is delivered for non-developer users ie: team assistant, human resource administrator etc. The fact is that not everyone knows or cares about the differences between various excel formats: csv, xls, xlsx are all the same to them.

Instead of training those users about file formats, this library helps web developers to handle most of the excel file formats by providing a common programming interface.

To add a specific excel file format type to you application, all you need is to install an extra pyexcel plugin. Hence no code changes to your application and no issues with excel file formats any more.

Looking at the community, this library and its associated ones try to become a small and easy to install alternative to Pandas. In order to manage the list of plugins installed, you need to use pip to add or remove a plugin.

When you use virtualenv, you can have different plugins per virtual environment. In the situation where you have multiple plugins that does the same thing in your environment, you need to tell pyexcel which plugin to use per function call.
